How it works:

The layout and configuration of each AutoStore are customized to fit your warehouse and specific fulfillment needs. It achieves high-speed efficiency by being designed to execute and optimize many smaller tasks all at the same time, for example fetching multiple Bins at simulataneously to retrieve different line items for different orders. The more modules an AutoStore is configured with (more Ports & Robots), the higher the maximum potential throughput it can reach, as it achieve a higher overall aggregated output.

Items are stored inside containers called Bins, stacked tightly in rows inside the Grid. Retrieval is automated via a fleet of Robots on top of the Grid retrieving Bins and transporting them to workstations referred to as Ports.

Overall system output is designed to be a result of the aggregation of many tasks and processes being executed with very high efficiency, all at the same time.

As long as there is enough space, there is no limit to designing additional configurations with more modules. More Robots, more Ports, and more Bins increase the potential throughput by increasing capacity to perform more tasks at the same time across the system.

So, for example, it’s possible to have more than one type of Port (workstation) used in the same system to help you optimize different processes. Robot density refers to the number of Robots that operate within your designated storage or warehouse area. The layout and design of a storage area impacts efficiency in two conflicting ways:

1. More Robots allow more tasks to be performed simultaneously, increasing overall capacity.
2. Higher numbers of Robots operating in the same area introduces increased potential for traffic congestion that can slow down efficiency again.  

An optimal design will have a high density of robots with flexible routing options and paths that can be used to transport inventory efficiently while avoiding traffic and congestion.

• Robot density is particularly important for warehouses with limited floor space but requiring high-throughput rates and large peak demands.
• This is because higher robot density allows you to achieve the same throughput rate in a smaller floor space than you would need with lower robot density.

Congestion & bottlenecks

By design, traditional shelving-based AS/RS solutions usually have restricted or pre-defined options for routing robot traffic. There is also usually a single zone at the edge of the storage area where traffic leaves and re-enters the storage area. All traffic must pass through this “front zone” when transporting items from the storage area and back again, making it very prone to bottlenecks. If a designated pathway is blocked or congested, there is little or no flexibility to take an alternative route, leading to congestion and bottlenecks around high-demand routes.

AutoStore uses continuous optimization

All AutoStore Robots are capable of navigating around the tracks on top of the Grid in all four direction planes (forwards↑, backwards ↓, ← left, right→). Robots also have the potential to present Bins to any workstation and can return Bins to the nearest available open slot in the Grid, providing huge flexibility for calculating possible traffic pathways at any one time. 

Router: Advanced navigation system

Instead relying on set or pre-defined routes, Router's advanced algorithms re-calculates optimal routes for each Robot every second. This maximizes transport efficiency for both high and low robot density configurations, as Robots can always take the most efficient pathway available, rather than waiting for a routeto clear.

This all adds up to being able to operate with a very high Robot density compared to other solutions, as all transport paths are potentially available to every Robot when required. Pick tunnels are common layouts for AutoStore systems that help to further reduce the distance Robots need to travel to transport a Bin to a Port. A series of Ports are placed in a tunnel formation below the Grid, running along the center of the storage zone.

• For very large Grids, this layout configuration can increase efficiency as the strategic placement of the Ports in the middle of the storage area means Robots only have to travel half the distance to reach a Port on average.
• Also a good solution to increase storage capacity if you have limited floor space as it allows you to have a wider Grid layout with additional rows of Bins.
• Great for maintaining or increasing throughput efficiently during peak season, you can have a high number of workstations with enough space to perform high-speed inbound and outbound processing at the same time.

Bin Lift is a specialized component that acts as a lift for AutoStore Bins to transport them vertically. Bin Lift enables Bins to be transported vertically in both directions and can be configured in one of two ways:

1. Grid-to-Port with SwingPort: allows picking to occur on a different level to the Grid with Ports on a different floor to the storage area.
2. Grid-to-Grid: Seamlessly move Bins between two Grids on different floors to optimize space for multi-level warehousing and extend Bin coverage.

No. This is because the slots where Bins are placed inside the Grid must all be the same size to allow for smooth operations. However, you can use adjustable dividers to make smaller compartments inside of a Bin.

Height is one criteria that can impact overall throughput. However, reducing Grid height means you would need an expanded physical footprint (in other words, a wider grid) to achieve a similar overall storage capacity.  Similar or better increases in speed can usually be achieved by addressing other more impactful variables first.

For example:

Increase total number of access openings on top of the Grid At any given time, there are a certain number of open slots available in the top row.

• This is to facilitate continuous Bin rotation as they’re being returned from Ports or new ones being prepared and brought to the top.
• Increasing the ratio of open slots enhances the efficiency of Bin rotation.

Adding more Robots (Increasing Robot density) Increasing the total number of Robots operating on your Grid increases total system output potential.

• More individual picking tasks can be executed at the same
• Testing where Grid height is the only changing variable demonstrates adding more Robots achieves the same, or comparable increases in throughput rate, as reducing the number of vertical Bin levels in most instances.

No, Grid size is one of the least impactful design configurations that determine the peed and efficiency of your AutoStore. It might be easy to assume that larger Grids equals more SKUs and longer distances and more Bins to dig through.

However, this is a logical phallacy and not how the solution works in practice. The throughput and system efficiency of any AutoStore are a result of the whole system output. System output is an aggregation of many different movements, tasks, and actions performed consistently, with maximum efficiency, all at the same time. Just looking at Grid size ignores or forgets to account for configuration. Essentially, a lager system can be configured with additional module components to increase the potential total aggregated output.

• A single Port has the speed to process hundreds of order lines/hour.
• A single Robot can perform dozens of transportation tasks/hour.

A larger Grid with more total inventory doesn't automatically equal further distances or more digging to retrieve items. In fact, the opposite is usually true; larger Grids can achieve higher throughput as they can can compensate by being configured with additional Ports and Robots to increase capacity to execute more total tasks at any one time. Additoinally, SKU distribution is always optimized based on current demand, whatever the size of your Grid, to ensure optimal picking efficiency.

AutoStore offers high speed performance to provide very fast order processing of a few minutes or less, even with high SKU diversity within orders. This means it is as fast, if not faster than other AS/RS solutions using vertical shelving or storage. When evaluating how quickly items can be retrieved from storage, people often forget there are two tasks involved that combine to determine overall efficiency:

i) How quickly an item is accessed in storage.
ii) How quickly it is then be transported from storage to a workstation for picking.

The total time it takes to perform these two tasks is a huge factor in determining speed and efficiency. To maximize speed and efficiency. AutoStore usually breaks executes these two steps separately, with a function called Bin digging. Bins are proactively retrieved from within the Grid and brought to the top row in preparation for when they're needed at a Port. This is a done at the same time as other Robots are transporting Bins from the top of the Grid to an available Port for an operator to pick the relevant SKU(s).  This means the vast majority of Bins are already waiting on the top of the Grid when it's actually time to transport them to a Port. However, Bins don't have to be prepared in advance, as the system has express/priority oder functionality to allow it to complete rush orders in approx. 1 - 4 mins with no prior digging required.

Once a Bin is retrieved, travel distances are 25-40% shorter on average High density storage reduces overall physical footprint that Robots must travel to reach a workstation. No, the modular design of the system means there is no single point of failure ("SPoF"). This means that individual errors or failures are isolated to the relevant Robot or component, and the system can continue to operate normally. If a Robot gets stuck on the Grid, the XHandler diagnostics software application in the automatically attempts to identify and resolve the error. As a fallback option, Xhandler can temporarily isolate the affected area and the rest of your Robot fleet can continue to operate around it. The system is only halted as last resort.

Yes. Since 2009, AutoStore has performed more than 100 fire tests conducted in real-world warehouse conditions, for small, medium and large systems. The purpose of these tests is for several reasons:

• Test & understand how potential fires behave and progress in different sizes of AutoStore systems.
• Learn and minimize risks.
• Investigate and demonstrate the efficacy of sprinkler systems in limiting the spread of fire.
• Testing of specific protection options such as foam, hypoxic air, control mode, and early suppression fast response (ESFR) sprinklers to verify their effectiveness.

Yes, automated sprinkler and/or oxygen reduction systems can be installed with AutoStore. Recommendations for automated sprinkler systems are based on standards such as FM Global Data Sheets 8-34, NFPA13, EN12845 or VdS CEA 4001.
